This country is confusing to many because it is also known as Holland. From what I understand Holland is two of the 12 provinces that make up the Netherlands, but Holland is commonly used when referring to the Netherlands as a whole. This is a country where I wish I would have spent more time. I made a choice to only stay for 5 days because reviews said I could do Amsterdam in 3 days. I was also worried about the cost because Amsterdam is so expensive.
I learned in my short stay that you can make Amsterdam affordable with a little planning. Don’t arrive in Amsterdam thinking you are going to Uber everywhere. If you do that you will surely spend a fortune. You don’t have to spend a fortune to stay in central Amsterdam. You can stay further out and use the very efficient local metro trains. If you have a short stay planned you can buy a two three or four day unlimited metro pass at the cost of one Uber ride and get everywhere you want to go.
Make sure you understand the difference between the Metro train and the NS train which is more expensive. Amsterdam alone was a big city that I feel I could have explored for weeks, so I can only imagine what the rest of the country has to offer. In spite of all the news of Amsterdam becoming anti-tourist I found the people to be very nice and helpful. In these short five days this has quickly become one of my favorite places. I will most certainly be making a trip back to The Netherlands to do more exploring and spend an extended amount of time.
