WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A BROKER AND AN AGENT

Updated: Jan 2, 2023

Real Estate Brokers in Texas have to complete four years of experience as an active sales agent in the five years prior to their application date. They also have to have an additional number of education hours to be eligible to take the exam to become a broker. Real estate brokers can act independently and are not required to work for a brokerage. Real estate brokers can hire real estate agents to work under their supervision. Real Estate Brokers are not to be confused with Mortgage Brokers. Mortgage brokers work with the financing of the home loan and real estate brokers handle the home search, negotiation and property market valuation.

Real Estate Agents are sponsored by real estate brokers and they do business in the name of their sponsoring broker. There are some agents who have as much education and experience as their broker sponsors. They just don’t want to deal with the liability that comes with the role of being a broker, so they choose to associate with a brokerage instead of acting independently.
